CyberSing 2004: See and Hear the winners

Charles Ives

1874-1954

An American original, Ives took what he liked from popular music, church hymns and patriotic songs and combined these elements into songs as well as orchestra pieces.

The song is called The Side Show, a take off of a popular World War 1 ballad "Mr. Riley's Hotel" and see if you can keep a predictable beat with the music. You'll hear a portion of Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony when a mention is made of the Russian dancer. Lehmann Foundation Advisor Robert White sings the whole piece with a smile in his sound.

Robert White, tenor
Samuel Sanders, piano.

The Side Show

Text by Charles Ives, after P. Rooney.

Set by Charles Ives

"Is that Mister Riley, who keeps the hotel?"
is the tune that accomp'nies the trotting-track bell;
An old horse, unsound, turns the merry-go-round,
making poor Mister Riley look a bit like a Russian dance,
some speak of so highly, as they do of Riley!
